The demarcation of responsibilities between the Guardia Civil and the National Police is very complicated and not always easy to understand. Both police forces have exclusively assigned tasks throughout the national territory. In the case of the Guardia Civil, these are, for example, the enforcement of weapons law, monitoring of road traffic outside built-up areas, border and coastal protection, prisoner transport and police tasks in the field of environmental protection. The National Police, on the other hand, is exclusively responsible for, among other things, issuing ID cards and passports, monitoring entry and exit, for tasks of the foreigners police and the prosecution of drug-related crime. As far as the other police tasks are concerned (especially the classic one of maintaining public security and order), the areas of responsibility are territorially delimited: the National Police carry them out in the provincial capitals (EIVISSA / IBIZA) and other cities designated by the government, the Guardia Civil the rest of the national territory (i.e. “on land”) and in the coastal waters. Both police forces perform both security and criminal police tasks.
